What is the IELTS Exam?

The IELTS exam - the International English Language Testing System - is the world's most widely taken English proficiency test, with over 3.5 million tests administered annually across more than 140 countries. Jointly managed by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and Cambridge Assessment English, IELTS is the benchmark accepted by universities, immigration authorities, and employers across the UK, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.

There are two formats: IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training. Academic is required for university admissions; General Training is used for work visas, immigration programmes, and vocational training. The test covers four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.

IELTS scores are reported on a band scale of 1 to 9, where 9 is Expert and 1 is Non-user. Most UK universities require a minimum of band 6.0 to 6.5, while Canadian immigration typically requires 6.0. For a detailed breakdown of what each band means for your goals, see our full IELTS band scores guide.

For North African learners in Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Egypt, IELTS has become the primary pathway to international education and skilled migration. These four countries rank among the highest IELTS-taking nations in the Middle East and North Africa region.

How to Prepare for IELTS - A Structured Approach

Effective IELTS preparation is not simply about doing lots of practice tests. It is about a structured, progressive programme that builds your English skills from the foundation upwards and then applies those skills in exam conditions. IELTS training online has never been more accessible - but knowing how to structure your study makes the difference between an average score and your target band.

Follow these six steps for a systematic IELTS preparation programme:

  1. Take a Placement Test Know your current English level before you plan anything. A placement test tells you whether you are at A2, B1, or B2 - and this determines your realistic preparation timeline. Take the Direct English placement test here - it is free and takes under 15 minutes.
  2. Understand the IELTS Format Familiarise yourself with the exact format, question types, and time limits for each section. Surprises on exam day cost marks. Study the structure of each paper before attempting any questions.
  3. Build Your English Foundation Grammar accuracy, academic vocabulary, and reading speed are the pillars of a high IELTS score. Do not rush into mock exams if your foundation is weak - invest time here first for the biggest long-term gains.
  4. Section-Specific Practice Target your weakest section first. Most North African students struggle most with academic Reading vocabulary and Writing Task 2 structure. Devote more study hours to your weakest area rather than splitting time equally.
  5. Full Mock Exams Under Timed Conditions Once you are scoring around band 4.5 or above in practice sections, begin full mock exams simulating real test conditions - no pausing, no dictionary, strict time limits. Complete at least five to eight full mocks in your final eight weeks.
  6. Review, Identify Errors, Repeat After every mock, categorise every wrong answer. Was it a vocabulary gap? A timing issue? A misread question? Targeted error correction is what moves your score from band 5.5 to band 6.5 and above.

IELTS Practice Tests - How to Use Them

IELTS practice tests are one of the most important elements of your preparation - but they must be used strategically. See our dedicated guide: IELTS Practice Tests - How to Prepare for Every Section.

There is an important distinction between section drills and full mock exams. Section drills - practising one question type at a time - are ideal in the first phase of preparation. They allow you to master specific skills without the time pressure of a full exam. Full mock exams should come later, once your individual section skills are solid.

A general rule: begin full mock exams when you are scoring approximately band 4.5 or above in individual sections. Before that point, focused skill building will improve your score faster than repeated mock tests. Aim to complete five to eight full mock exams in the eight weeks before your actual test date. After each mock, spend at least as long reviewing your answers as you did completing the test.

For recommended practice test sources, including official free resources and the Cambridge IELTS book series, see the practice tests guide.

How to Register for IELTS in North Africa

IELTS is administered in North Africa through two official partners: the British Council and IDP: IELTS Australia. Both organisations use the same exam and marking standards - there is no difference in difficulty or score between the two. Registration is completed online through their respective websites.

Test centre locations across North Africa include:

  • Morocco: Casablanca, Rabat
  • Algeria: Alger (Algiers)
  • Tunisia: Tunis
  • Egypt: Cairo, Alexandria

Frequently Asked Questions

The questions below cover the most common concerns from IELTS candidates in North Africa. For more questions about Direct English courses, visit our frequently asked questions page.

The best way to prepare for IELTS is to follow a structured, multi-stage approach. Start by taking a placement test to establish your current English level, then study each section systematically. Build your core English skills first - grammar, vocabulary, reading speed - then move to section-specific strategies and question types. Use official IELTS practice materials from ielts.org and Cambridge IELTS books (volumes 1-18). In the final 8 weeks before your exam, complete full timed mock exams and analyse every error carefully. Consider structured online IELTS training with qualified tutors who can give personalised feedback on Writing and Speaking - the two sections where examiner-level feedback makes the biggest difference to your score.

Preparation time depends on your current English level. If you are at B1 (intermediate), expect 3 to 6 months of consistent study to reach band 6.5 or above. Students already at B2 (upper intermediate) may reach band 7 in 2 to 3 months. Those starting from A2 should allow 6 to 12 months. The key variable is study intensity - 1 hour per day will take twice as long as 2 hours per day. Take a free placement test first to get a realistic estimate for your specific situation.

IELTS Academic is required for university admissions at undergraduate and postgraduate level in the UK, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. The Reading and Writing sections use academic-level texts and formal writing tasks. IELTS General Training is designed for work visas, immigration, and vocational training programmes. It uses everyday English texts in Reading (notices, advertisements, workplace documents) and practical writing tasks. Both versions share the same Listening and Speaking tests. If you are applying to a UK or Australian university, you need IELTS Academic.

The best free resources are the official IELTS website (ielts.org), which provides sample test papers and preparation materials, and the British Council's free IELTS sample tests and practice exercises. YouTube channels from the British Council and IELTS.org offer free listening and speaking practice videos. Additionally, the Cambridge Dictionary website has vocabulary learning tools useful for Reading preparation. Direct English Live offers a 14-day free trial, giving you access to live tutor-led sessions specifically designed to improve your IELTS performance - a significant advantage over purely self-study options.

UK university IELTS requirements vary by institution and course. For undergraduate entry, most universities require band 6.0 to 6.5 overall, with no individual section below 5.5 or 6.0. For postgraduate programmes, requirements are typically band 6.5 to 7.0 overall. Competitive courses such as Medicine, Law, and Nursing often require band 7.0 or above in each section. The University of Oxford and Imperial College London typically require 7.0 to 7.5 overall. Always check the specific requirements of your chosen institution and course directly - requirements can vary significantly even within the same university.
