Over 35 million people have taken the TOEFL since it was introduced - and for good reason. It is the most widely accepted English proficiency test for academic admission, recognised by 11,500+ universities and institutions across 160 countries, including every Ivy League university, the majority of UK and European graduate programmes, and most Canadian universities.
For students in North Africa - Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt - the TOEFL is often the decisive step between a local degree and an international one. This guide covers everything: how the test works, what each section requires, how scores map to CEFR levels and university thresholds, and how Direct English Live prepares you for all four sections.
ETS significantly shortened the TOEFL iBT in July 2023. The test now takes approximately 2 hours (down from nearly 3.5 hours). Number of passages and tasks was reduced but difficulty and scoring range (0-120) remain identical. All practice materials published after July 2023 reflect the current format.
1. What Is the TOEFL iBT?
The TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language Internet-Based Test) is developed and administered by ETS (Educational Testing Service), a US-based non-profit organisation. It measures your ability to use and understand English at the university level - not just isolated grammar or vocabulary, but integrated language use across all four skills.
Who Accepts It
11,500+ universities and institutions in 160+ countries. Every Ivy League, all UK Russell Group, most Canadian and European universities.
Test Duration
Approximately 2 hours total (Reading 35 min, Listening 36 min, Speaking 16 min, Writing 29 min).
Scoring
0-120 total (each section 0-30). Scores valid for 2 years. Results available within 4-8 days.
Test Location
Test centre or Home Edition (identical format, same acceptance). Home Edition requires webcam and remote proctor.
2. TOEFL iBT Format - The 4 Sections
| Section | Duration | Tasks | Score | Key Skill |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reading | 35 min | 2 passages, 20 questions | 0-30 | Understand academic texts, infer meaning, analyse arguments |
| Listening | 36 min | 3 lectures, 2 conversations, 28 questions | 0-30 | Understand lectures and academic discussions |
| Speaking | 16 min | 4 tasks (1 independent + 3 integrated) | 0-30 | Speak clearly and coherently on academic topics |
| Writing | 29 min | 2 tasks (Integrated + Academic Discussion) | 0-30 | Write structured responses using source material |
| Total | ~2 hours | — | 0-120 | — |
Unlike IELTS where sections are largely independent, TOEFL uses integrated tasks - you read AND listen before speaking or writing. This tests your ability to synthesise information, which is exactly what university academic work requires. Preparing specifically for integrated tasks is essential and different from general English practice.

Practice tests are the single most important preparation tool. They train your stamina, reveal your weak sections, and familiarise you with the integrated format under timed conditions.

The 3-Phase Practice Strategy
- Diagnostic test first - take one full test before preparing to find your baseline score and identify weak sections. Don't study first - the baseline needs to be honest.
- Section-by-section targeted work - spend 60-70% of your preparation time on the weakest 1-2 sections. Use official ETS materials and format-specific drills, not general English resources.
- Full timed mock tests - take at least 3-4 complete timed tests in the final 2-3 weeks. Simulate real exam conditions: no phone, no breaks beyond the designated break, at a desk.
6. TOEFL vs IELTS - Which Should You Take?
Both tests prove your English at an academic level, but they suit different learners and destinations. The choice depends on where you are applying and which format plays to your strengths.

Your TOEFL score report includes total score (0-120), per-section scores (0-30 each), and a MyBest Scores feature that shows the highest sub-scores you have achieved across all recent tests - many universities accept MyBest Scores, which means each test you take can contribute to your best possible overall profile.
ETS introduced MyBest Scores to allow test-takers to combine their best sub-scores from multiple sittings. If you score Reading 28 in one test and Speaking 24 in another, MyBest would show both at their peak. Always check whether your target university accepts MyBest Scores before deciding whether to retake individual sections.
